West Northumberland Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) is an independent registered charity (and limited company) that has been providing free advice to the residents of West Northumberland for over 35 years.
Rural Northumberland has one of the highest levels of fuel poverty in the country.
Our funding will enable a qualified CAB caseworker (also qualified City and Guilds Energy certification) to carry out a home visits. They will help the clients find the best tariff and advise of energy savings measures. Where possible grants will be applied for energy savings equipment ranging from white goods to boilers. The third approach will include ensuring the clients are in receipt of all the benefits they are entitled to and where any debts are involved a CAB debt adviser might become involved.
The overall aim is to maximise the income and reduce expenditure of all clients.
Clients self-refer through CABs drop-in services, approach them via telephone service or by email. Specific sessions are run at locations such as Sure Start or events run by local groups. The referrals are mostly made through their debt advisers, if energy costs can be reduced or written off and their Macmillan/CAB service. The clients with cancer spend longer in their homes, they are more prone to cold conditions and often have to leave employment. Reducing the fuel bills is a critical element of ensuring their lives are as comfortable as possible.
